The most common damage we see in the loc chair is not neglect. It is love: retwisting so often that the roots never get to rest. Locs are hair, and hair breaks when it is twisted tight every two weeks for a year.
The schedule that keeps roots alive
- Starter locs: every 4 to 6 weeks while the pattern establishes. Consistency matters more than tightness here.
- Mature locs: every 6 to 8 weeks is the healthy window for most heads.
- Fine or color-treated hair: stretch toward 8 weeks and tell your loctician; fine roots need gentler tension.
If your scalp itches like crazy, flakes, or feels tender at the root a few days after a retwist, that is tension talking. A good retwist should feel snug the first day and forgotten by the third.
Between retwists
Sleep with something on your head — a bonnet or a satin pillowcase, no debate. Keep the scalp oiled lightly, not soaked. And washing is not the enemy: clean locs lock faster and tighter than dirty ones, whatever the old myth says.
